Ask an accountancy practice where new clients come from and you will hear referrals, then a pause. The website is usually treated as somewhere to point people who were already sent, which is a fair description of what most accountancy sites are capable of.
They can do more than that. We built KBMS Accountants and the structure below is what we would repeat.
The question everyone has and nobody answers
What will this cost. Practices avoid publishing it because every client is different, which is true and also an excuse. A range with the variables spelled out ("sole trader self assessment from £X, depending on records and whether bookkeeping is included") converts better than silence, and it filters out the enquiries you did not want. Publishing a range is also how you show up for the cost searches that make up a large share of the demand.
Service pages, split properly
Self assessment, limited company accounts, VAT returns, payroll, bookkeeping and tax planning are separate searches made by different people. One "Our Services" page listing all six ranks for none. Six pages, each answering that specific need, gives you six lower-competition entry points.
Who you actually serve
An accountant for contractors is not the same business as one for restaurants. Pages built around the client type rather than the service ("accountants for contractors", "bookkeeping for e-commerce sellers") face far less competition and they convert better, because the reader recognises themselves in it.
Local matters more here than almost anywhere
Plenty of people still want an accountant they could visit. That means:
- A Google Business Profile that is actually filled in and has reviews on it.
- Your address and phone number in the same format everywhere they appear online.
- Town or city pages, but only for places you genuinely serve. Forty templated pages for forty towns is a doorway pattern and it will be treated as one.
Trust signals for this sector
- Your professional body membership, with the registration number.
- Named partners with actual qualifications listed.
- The software you work in. Xero, QuickBooks, Sage. People search for these and they are deciding factors.
- Reviews. In a trust purchase they carry more weight than anything you write about yourself.
One practical thing
Put a simple calculator or checklist on the site. A tax deadline checklist, a simple take-home calculator, a limited-company-versus-sole-trader comparison. These earn links from forums and local press without asking anybody for anything, and link building is the hardest part of ranking a small practice.
If you want this built, it is web development plus SEO, and for most practices the second matters more than the first.
